The importance of healthy vision and excellent eye care for kids

While eye health is important at every age, it’s especially critical for kids. Good vision is central to children’s healthy development, impacting reading and language skills, social development, eye-hand coordination, and more. Children’s eye exams

Following infant and toddler eye exams, we recommend that every child get their eyes checked before starting preschool and then annually afterwards. Children grow quickly, and their eyes and vision can change rapidly, too. Regular eye exams help our eye doctors catch any eye issues early, preventing more serious vision problems down the road.

While eye exams may look different depending on your child’s needs, you can expect your optometrist to test for visual acuity, eye focusing, depth perception, color perception, eye tracking, peripheral awareness, and eye muscle teaming. Your eye doctor will also conduct screenings for eye conditions and diseases, ensuring not only clear vision but excellent eye health.

Developmental optometry and vision therapy

Many of the eye skills required for clear, easy vision are learned. If these eye skills are underdeveloped or undeveloped, your child may struggle with their vision and consequently experience issues with concentration, reading, writing, learning, socializing, and playing sports.

Pediatric myopia treatment

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is a very common eye condition that’s on the rise in children. Myopia makes faraway objects appear blurry, which can be especially disruptive for your child who needs to be able to see in school or sports to keep up.

Children with myopia may complain of headaches or eye strain or may squint their eyes, bring objects close to their eyes, experience increased difficulty concentrating, or display a sudden lack of interest in an activity that requires good vision. We always check for myopia during your child’s comprehensive eye exam. Treatment for the eye condition can include special eye drops, glasses, or contact lenses.

Eye injuries can happen to anyone, but given children’s regular participation in sports, other physical activities, and play, eye care emergencies can be even more common. Our Encinitas optical shop has a wide selection of stylish, comfortable glasses and sunglasses for our youngest patients. Our opticians will help you and your child find the perfect pair of frames that they’ll love wearing, and we’ll walk your family through the proper care process for your purchase.

We also carry a variety of products as well as contact lens options in our optical shop. We know that putting in a contact lens for the first time can be intimidating, especially for our young patients. Our amazing staff will patiently walk you and your child through the whole process of putting in and taking out a contact lens.

Your child deserves the best, and at Beyond Vision Center, that’s exactly what we provide. Drs. Raja and Morgan are dedicated to your child’s eye health and vision and committed to ensuring that their eye care experience is memorable and enjoyable.

Dr. Raja is specialized in pediatric optometry and has experience with pediatric patients from her time working in a community health clinic. She is also an acclaimed vision therapist and developmental optometrist in Encinitas and the greater San Diego area. Dr. Morgan gained experience working with pediatric patients during his time at a private practice and is committed to providing exceptional eye care in a fun, approachable setting for young patients.

Our whole eye care team is passionate about establishing personal, trusting relationships with every patient—our youngest ones included!
