When we prescribe contact lenses

During a comprehensive eye exam, our doctors will assess your visual acuity with a series of tests. If it is determined that there is a refractive error that needs to be corrected, we will walk you through all your options to achieve effortless vision. Some patients may elect to solely wear glasses if that aligns with their vision needs and lifestyle.

Many patients choose to be fitted for contact lenses in addition to glasses thanks to the ease they provide. If this is your first time using contact lenses, there are a few steps our doctors will take to ensure that your lenses fit perfectly. This process includes measurements of the eye’s surface, a tear film evaluation, and a final fitting test.

Types of contact lenses

Thanks to the advancements of modern optometry, there are many different types of contact lenses to fit the needs of any patient. From the lens material to the wearing time, we will work with you to choose the type that works best for your eyes and vision needs. The most common contact lens material is silicone hydrogel lenses, which are an advanced type of soft lenses.

Other types include gas permeable lenses and hybrid contact lenses. Some lenses must only be worn for one day, while some can last for weeks to months with proper care. It is important to adhere to the proper wear time of your contact lenses to keep your eyes healthy.

How contact lenses work

Contact lenses function by refocusing the direction of light rays onto the retina for proper refraction. This is also how glasses work, but contact lenses are far thinner, thanks to their ability to rest directly on the eye, providing greater ease of wear.

Getting comfortable with contacts

When trying out contact lenses for the first time, it can take some time to get used to putting them in, taking them out, and wearing them in general. During your final lens fitting, we will ensure that you have mastered the process of wearing contacts and are comfortable with how they feel and how they correct your vision. If any concerns arise during use, we are always happy to answer any questions, whether over the phone or in a follow-up appointment.
